Hundreds enter cake competition at Norfolk Show

There was a fantastic response to the Guess The Weight Of The Cake competition at the Bidwells EDP Norfolk Food Festival stand in the Food Hall at this year's Royal Norfolk Show. Over 750 people tried to guess the weight of the fabulous cake which was created by Julia Hetherton on behalf of The Assembly House Norwich and which weighed 8lb 8oz (3kg 850g).

Decorated with a fresh flower posy by Alison Hughes, the florist at The Assembly House, the elegant iced fruit cake was made from 4lbs fruit, 1 1/4 lbs flour, 1 1/4 lbs butter, 1 1/4 lbs dark brown sugar and 10 eggs, and took six-and-a-half hours to cook. The prize was afternoon tea for four at The Assembly House and the winner, who guessed the exact weight, was Sandra Portas from Erpingham.

During the Bidwells EDP Norfolk Food Festival, The Assembly House will be offering a special afternoon tea and tour on Sunday 27th September. This will consist of a heritage tour of the building by Mike King at 3pm followed by a cookery demonstration from chocolatier and patissier Julia Hetherton, then afternoon tea at 4pm together with a short talk on "Afternoon Tea: An English Institution" from celebrity chef Richard Hughes and then live piano music from 4pm to 5pm. The special Afternoon Tea & Tour is priced at £18 per person and bookings can be made on 01603 627526.

The Assembly House is located on Theatre Street, Norwich, NR2 1RQ
